After purchasing this Cup of Excellence coffee we decided to put it aside to age for a few years and boy has it been worth the wait.
The Cup of Excellence program was developed to lift the profile of coffee in the producing countries. It basically allows the coffee growers to exhibit their produce in a professional unbiased blind tasting competition to showcase the pinnacle of each origin.
Miguel Moreno Leiva and his father Daniel Moreno have owned the micro lot farm called El Fino. Miguel remembers his father having the property some 40 years back whereby it only had a small pulping machine and a wooden fermentation tank with a tiny capacity of 90 kilos. Over the years Miguel was determined to improve the coffee quality. With limited knowledge, he courageously enter the 2nd Honduran Cup of Excellence in 2005 but unfortunately Miguel placed last. This result only fuelled Miguel determination to get it right. He entered again in 2006 and paid much attention at IHCAFE where he would bring his coffee cherries for processing. This time he placed 18th. In 2007 Miguel went again only this time processing the coffee himself with better results he then went on to place 3rd in 2008 and this year he placed 5th overall.
